Weekword ~ Mercurial: The Afghan

Here in Southern California although our winter weather is really very mild considering what other people are going through this year, we are experiencing our usual mercurial changes in temperature...up one day, down the next. That is why is it always nice to have a throw or an afghan near by to toss over you for added warmth in the evening when you are watching television, reading, or for an afternoon nap. I always like a needle work project to carry me through the long winter nights, so this year I decided to make a new afghan for the media/family room to help me cozy up when I am feeling chilly.




 I picked a color that would blend in with the color palette I have selected for the room, I didn't particulary want the afghan to stand out, but rather to blend in and just add textural interest. I bought all of the yarn at an after Christmas sale at Michael's. I picked a very simple and mindless pattern that keeps my hands busy, but lets my mind free to chat, daydream, talk on the telephone, or listen to television or music...very therapeutic and relaxing. Crocheting is so much fun and easy to do, if you haven't tried it I highly recommend doing so ~ the results are quite amazing.





I still have quite a bit to do, but it really doesn't take very long. I love the lace-like appearance of crochet. What do you think...c'est  jolie, non?

    Afghans are always so nice to have. Wish I could crochet, but I was always so dorky about it. Lovely photos and lovely afghan!

    I think it's beautiful! Love the color, and I too agree it's always nice to have an afghan to cozy up under.

    I do not crochet or knit and find it hard to believe that this beautiful afghan's pattern is simple to do!

    Maybe I should try crocheting as one of my "new" things to do for January. Do I teach myself from a book or would you recommend a class?

    I love the color and the pattern. I haven't crocheted in awhile. Would love to make one of these, in the same color and pattern you are using. Gorgeous afghan. We always have one or two afghans or throws around.

    Oh it looks lovely and I agree I keep a few draped over the couch and just this morning it was quite chilly we were all huddled under them to warm up ~Beautiful handwork ~Love Heather

    Learning to crochet has been on my "must do" list for a gazillion years. I have a great beginners book and was able to do some simple stuff but haven't tried actually applying what I learned to a real project.

    I agree with the "other" Adrienne - it looks complicated.

    Such a lovely afghan! How great that you crochet it yourself. I somehow don't get the hang to crochet. don't know why, I'm a knitter, and not even a very good one. However, I like to keep my hands busy! Wonderful WeekWord post.

    The weather everywhere has been decidedly mercurial. I love the scallops in the afghan. Time for me to stop trying to teach myself and take a class. ;-)

    I am going to teach myself to crochet this year. As a knitter I find the idea of being able to do something that goes quicker irresistible! Your afghan is beautiful.

    1. I am terrible at crocheting, my poor grandmother almost lost her temper more than once trying to teach me how when I younger.
    2. You make it look so easy, but then again that shouldn't surprise me...you make everything look easy :)
    3. I absolutely adore afghans and snuggling up in them at this time of year-perhaps I can talk a friend of mine who is a much better handy girl than I into making one for me :)

    I love to crochet as well. That's a very interesting pattern. You always take such beautiful photos of your home Adrienne! Looks like it's right out of Architectural Digest or Home and Garden. :-)

    I do not knit or crochet... I have an afghan very much like the one you are making . A dear friend made it for me over twenty years ago. It has warmed many feet both large ones and small ones .Everytime I cover up with it on chilly nights it is like a warm hug from sweet Anita .

    If only I could knit...I bought a throw two weeks ago, in a pale olive green, to have in my mom's rocking chair. Now that she's a grandma looking after her grand-child, I thought it would be a nice addition to her pretty chair, so that they can cuddle up, reading a story. :o)
