Plaisirs Simples ~ Ann's Chair

Ann was my father's sister, the eldest of eleven children. When I was a child and we went to her house we were  awed with its elegance and always on our best behavior. Ann was always very nice to us but was definitely not a warm or cuddly aunt and we were all slightly afraid of her. This chair sat in her front room but no one was ever allowed to sit in it as it was deemed too valuable. As time went by and Ann passed away many of her things found their way to me and this was one of them. Now of course I realize that although it is a very cute chair it really isn't an important antique or significant piece of furniture. Why she held it is such esteem is probably a fascinating story, but one I will never know. To me however this chair represents a part of my childhood and  thus is important. It now sits in the entry hall across from my grandfather's clock, which also made its way to me through Ann... but that is a story for another post.

Do you have many things in your home that bring back childhood memories?

  1. Many things! Some of them stored away for repair or redo. I'd better get busy and use them!

  4. Auntie's chair is lovely, sitting there beside your window seat. I never tire of looking at pictures of your home and garden ~ it's all so beautiful! I have many of my grandmother's items in my possession, which always take me back to happy times in my childhood.

  5. I've been living in the same house my entire life, so every corner has a story! My grandma used to live with us until she passed away. Now, every corner of what used to be her space - now mine as well - brings back memories, as well as many of her belongings, now my treasures.
There is a chair - not as pretty as your aunt Ann's - in very bad shape, but which used to belong to my grandma, and reminds me of Sunday's luncheons (she used to made the most amazing soups!). I've been meaning to fix it and place it in one of the special corners. Will do so as soon as possible! It deserves it.
Thanks for sharing! and have a great day!

  7. It looks lovely in your home. I have a chair that was my mother's and I remember the day we covered it in new fabric. Love those memories.

  8. Your story is so enjoyable. Yes, we have things that were important to ancestors, too. I often wonder what our grandchildren and others will think of the things we treasure! Linda

  9. That's a nice story -- I have too many things in my house I should have parted with long ago, but keep on account of memories. It's amazing how "home" is not quite home without pieces to remind us of people or places. That's what makes a house beautiful, isn't it?

  10. What a nice story. I don't have that many things that have a special meaning to them. Mostly, because I don't like clutter. I just have a few things from my grandparents that remind me of my childhood.

  11. A miniature china tea set that an aunt let me play with when i visited...it was kept in a special cabinet and I spent many hours happily serving tea to my dolls...I now have it here in my cabinet and am hoping my granddaughter will come to love it too!

Interesting that a simple chair had such an important place in your aunt's home...I also think adults were sterner when we were growing up...at least that has been my experience.

  12. I have a quilt that my grandmother gave me--made by her mother. Not beautiful, but quite the treasure!

  13. How wonderful that you keep the chair that meant so much to her. I wonder what the story behind it is...

  14. It really is quite a lovely little chair, Adrienne. I love the flowing lines of it. How ironic that you couldn't sit on it as a child, but now it belongs to you. I'm sure you will be much more gracious about letting others sit on it. ;)

Thanks for linking to the party.

  15. The chair is lovely and certainly looks right at home in its surroundings. I always find it amazing when anyone deems an object to be of such great value that it can't be used or enjoyed. Since we can't take anything with us when we go, we might as well enjoy everything fully in the here and now. kHave a terrific day! :) Tammy

  20. Isn't it funny what we remember and then not know why? I have something from my husband's aunt that brings back memories from being early married...my relatives are still alive, or didn't leave things. What a blessing to have some of your past.

  21. Love your post
I just bet there sure was a wonderful story behind the chair ...this just came to mind that maybe just maybe it was her way of having a chair for JESUS that he was always welcome in her home....mmmmm....makes one wonder !! love the picture

  22. It's a darling chair, such a pretty shape. I really like the drapery panel behind the chair too. My cottage is filled with many family "heirlooms" and I love each and every one of them. Those little family treasures that may be worthless to others, keep the memory alive of those we miss.

    Love,

  23. I love the chair, and the story that goes with it. I think we all had a relative or two that we were slightly afraid of. :)

  27. My house is an irreverent museum collection of things I'm fortunate enough to have inherited- and I've been sworn not to paint them.

  28. I would totally sit in that chair! It's so very cute. I winder why she wouldn't let anyone sit on it, given that it's wood and can't really be harmed? Oh well. It's very cool that you have it now. Adrienne, do you paint? I notice the painting in your header, is it one of yours?

  29. I have a wonderful rocking chair which brings back unique memories of when, just a teenager, a nun from my school in the States decided that it was going to become mine! It was her giveaway present. I was leaving The US for Italy and she felt that it was the best way for me, in the years to come, to rock my way through my US memories!
I used it when I breastfed my three little chipmunks while sitting in my veranda and I still rock myself on it!
    hope to hear from you
