Rust and Roses

When I was backing out of my driveway the other day I saw this beautiful vintage tea rose peeking through the gate and thought that the juxtaposition of the delicate, softly colored pink rose against the rusted iron gate was so pretty ~ the beauty of opposites...the ying and the yang. 

We had these gates made a few years ago to fit between the driveway's stone pillars by a very talented local artisan after a trip to Charleston. We came home enthralled with all of the iron work we had seen there. The gates were intentionally treated to be a rusty color; I simply love them, they are one of my favorite additions to the garden. The rose, alas I don't remember the name, although as I said before it is an old fashion tea and like many of my vintage roses it probably came from the Antique Rose Emporium; they have a wonderful selection of old roses. This rose is a very large bush reaching easily from six to eight feet and blooms almost continuously.

I don't know if there is anything prettier than a rose and I must admit that pink roses are my favorite. Do you have a favorite colored rose...?

    The gates are divine and the pink rose looks lovely peeking through the ironwork.

    My favourite rose is Jude the Obscure...peachy yellow...the scent is intoxicating...cannot wait for this rose to bloom...it has just been pruned and now I wait!

    love the first & third picture the best! oh! strong ironwork against the soft, luscious greenery & pink roses. what a combination. are these roses fragrant? no sun peeking through the dreary clouds yet?

    Oh Adrienne, such wonderful gates. I love the ironwork!
    My favorite rose (and all in all I am not too fond of roses) is a David Austen rose (English rose) called "Raubritter". It's a pink rambler that can grow BIG, HUGE. I had one in Germany that didn't do very well - it probably missed the mild weather of Southern England and didn't like the freezing German winters.

    The gate is so lovely.It reallly looks pretty with the roses.

    Gorgeous, gorgeous and you photography is amazing. I am a pink rose girl myself. In fact that is what I carried in my wedding bouquet with white daisies in the mix. Love your gate.     Well, I like all colors, and all flowers, but when it comes to roses, I have to say a have a soft spot for white roses. They seem so delicate and so unique...But I too like the lavender ones (they smell amazing!) and the yellow ones. Did you know my boss used to have a rose farm, and the company used to export the most beautiful roses up the the United States? Good times! But the market came to a bad point some years ago, and it had to close. It was a great job! Now, it's all about vegetables and fruit. Equally nice!, but not fragrance from them :o)

    I do have a favorite color rose...yellow ones. I love yellow. Any rose can look fabulous next to a black iron gate though. Lovely mosaic.

    The gates are amazing; how wonderful and ornate! Roses, however, are none too fond of Florida, so I am very unfamiliar with them. Your tea rose is beautiful in that setting.

    My favorite...pink, in any shade, size or shape. As I am a fan of things Victorian, I love roses against ornate metal. Your gates are quite lovely!

    I want a gate like that. Sure it would look strange with the white fence, but the gate would make me happy.

    Love the pink rose. I love roses. I just can't get them to grow well. Except for Knock out roses. I have yellow, red and pink. I'll probably be tempted by another rose bush this spring.
