DIY frustrations ~

I am finally getting back to the guestroom. I started this project several months ago. It's not that I didn't want to get it finished but other more important things seemed to get in the way, such as the holidays, engagement parties, annual pruning, and must needed changes in the garden related to the drought.

So far I have completed painting the room, rehung the doors on their beautiful new brass hinges, installed new ceiling moldings, and had the chandelier hung. But like all home decoration projects there have been difficulties one doesn't anticipate such as what happened today...

I have the drapery fabric, the lining, and a gorgeous trim but before I start making the drapes I have to hang the new drapery rod. You would think this would be a simple, quick affair, unfortunately NO! I discovered that putting up an eight foot drapery rod on your own is not an easy thing to do.

I won't go into the nasty details but somehow I ended up with a rather large hole in the plaster which I made while trying to extract a molly bolt I had not positioned correctly...thank goodness for Spackle.

I was eventually able to get one...yes only one, of the brackets installed, the other will have to wait to tomorrow as I have had enough frustration for one day Now at least I have some idea what I am doing and I expect it to go better tomorrow.

Meanwhile I want to share a close-up of my beautiful new chandelier with you.

This is definitely the star of the room...at least until I get the drapes finished.

DIY projects are not always fun and easy.

Thank you for visiting. Remind me to tell you about the new retaining wall, another project.

PS. It is the next day and both of the brackets and the rod are up. Hooray! Now I can start sewing.

  1. I think as we get older it seems to be harder to get the curtain rods up, painting, etc. At least it is for me. I have very little patient ions to do that stuff. The material is beautiful and I love the chandler - it's perfect.
My friend just remodeled her home and had two beautiful chandlers and asked if I wanted them. One was from pottery Barn and the other one from Lamp's Plus so I now have a beautiful potttery Barn in my living room and the other in my guest room. The others will go to who would ever like them or use them.
    Good luck with your remodeling.
I just came in from laying down a drip mist system and I am pooped - to hot for me.
Have a great rest of the week and looking forward to seeing your guest room reveal.

  2. Adrienne, I can see why things are giving you trouble. If I had to do any of this work by myself, I know it would never get done. I can't wait to see your room. I know that you have a beautiful special plan in mind and when you get done it will be spectacular. The bling is really beautiful.Pairing it with the drapery material is going to be smashing..Happy Wednesday..Judy

  4. The peek you have given us of your guestroom is so tantalizing! I'm sure it will be lovely and I can't wait to see it! What is the name and of the warm and beautiful color you have chosen for the walls? We have used Cameo White by Benjamin Franklin for years, but I like the color you have chosen too :)

I grew up in Pasadena. Are you in the California-Lake Ave. district? I remember Rose Tree Cottage and have such fond memories of having tea there in the little English cottage courtyards that were on California.

The pictures of your garden are just gorgeous and sometimes I feel quite homesick as I view them. We are now in the high desert area of Arizona where nothing but prairie grass grows well :(

  6. Ahhhh....that room will be gorgeous, I can already tell!!!
I'm sorry that you are having problems with the rods. I did that job last fall and don't know whether to admire my work when I walk into the room, or glare at it!!!
Tell Miss Kitty she should be helping you with the other end....I'm sure that if there was a ladder set up, she would HAVE to climb it just because :^)
Please tell us the secret of your lovely chandelier?? It is truly awesome!
    Be blessed,
    J
